Sawyer Sweeten, just weeks shy of his 20th birthday, took his own life, his sister said in a statement Thursday.

“This morning a terrible family tragedy has occurred,” Madylin said in a statement. “We are devastated to report that our beloved brother, son, and friend, Sawyer Sweeten, took his own life. He was weeks away from his 20th birthday. At this sensitive time, our family requests privacy and we beg of you to reach out to the ones you love.”

According to Radar Online, Sweeten shot himself on the porch of a family member’s home.

Sweeten played Geoffrey Barone on the show, which starred Ray Romano as the beloved TV patriarch, which ran from 1996-2000. Sweeten began working on the show when he was only 16 months old and continued until the show’s end. His real life siblings, Madilyn and Sullivan, also starred on the show as the Romano children.

His co-stars, heartbroken by the news, paid tribute to him on their social media pages.

Romano gave a statement to E! News that he was “shocked and terribly saddened” by the news.

“He was a wonderful and sweet kid to be around,” he said. “Just a great energy whenever he was there. My heart breaks for him, his family and his friends during this very difficult time.”

Patricia Heaton, who played his mother on the show, took to Twitter to express her sadness over the news.

Gone way too soon! We’re sending our condolences to his family in this terrible time.
