The data dump includes full names, email addresses, phone numbers, and some credit-card data as well. The hackers, who refer to themselves as the “Impact Team,” shared the data because Ashley Madison was not taken down as they demanded.

Interestingly, 15,000 of the email addresses exposed in the hack are .gov or .mil addresses. (Politicians?) It should be noted that it’s unclear whether the information provided by users was phony or legit. Regardless, the hackers offered the following advice for their victims:

“Find yourself in here? It was ALM that failed you and lied to you. Prosecute them and claim damages. Then move on with your life. Learn your lesson and make amends. Embarrassing now, but you’ll get over it.”

As a result of the hack, the website’s traffic has been virtually cut in half.
